It appears that McCain is finally going after Obama aggressively
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9964.html
This politico article says it is because they have completely dismissed Hillary Clinton. There is certainly some truth to that. McCain needs to pick an opponent to run against. But I think the article misses the deeper truth I pointed out in the most recent podcast. McCain has a chance to weaken Obama and the Democratic party by doing Hillary's job for her and thus give her a real shot at the nomination. Hillary can't win votes by pointing out Obama's ridiculous stance on the capital gains tax. But McCain can begin to weaken Obama for her.

Obama is Outraged! Reeeeaaaly?
It took Obama 20 years (plus an extra few weeks) to figure out that Rev. Wright is a complete nut. Everyone else figured this out after listening to three minutes of his speeches.
Today Obama said he is "outraged" at Wright's recent comments and behavior. Let's get this straight. Obama wasn't "outraged" when Wright said "God damn America." But Obama is outraged that Wright is going around acting like a clown and intentionally making Obama look bad.
Obama needs to get his priorities straight.

Obama and Clinton support the destruction of the World Economy
OK, that is not the goal, but it is the likely outcome of the unrealistic environmental targets they have set. Even if you believe there is no debate over the cause of global warming, shouldn't we have a debate about the costs of the supposed fix?

Earth Day Tribute to Al Gore propaganda
Another lie has been exposed in Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth"
They used fake footage of the Antarctic Ice Melting!
For those who haven't been keeping track, most of the powerful anecdotes Gore used to hype the threat of global warming have been proven false.
For those who haven't been keeping track, here are a few highlights of the inaccuracies:
1. Polar Bears are not drowning. The few drowned polar bears they have found died because of an unusual storm.
2. The snows of Mount Kilimanjaro did not melt because of global warming. The atmospheric temperatures are always freezing at that altitude. If anything, it was likely due to increased Sun exposure.
3. The sea levels are not going to rise by several feet and wipe out the East Coast. The UN Estimate shows sea levels rising by only a few inches over several hundred years.
4. The warmest temperatures on record have not been in the last few years. They came much earlier in the 1900's.
It is possible Gore has a point about Global warming (although it is certainly debatable). But it might be nice if his "documentary" wasn't filled with lies and inaccuracies.

Liberals didn't like the tough debate. Big Surprise
This week there were howls of protest from the Obama supporters who thought the ABC debate was somehow unfair. The complaints from these people show that they are not ready for what comes in a general election.
The complaints prove what I have been saying for a long time: So far these Democratic debates have been filled with soft ball questions and have let them play on liberal turf. As soon as they are asked questions that conservatives want to know, they fail miserably.
This summary of complaints is pretty hilarious:

Obama Answers the Tough Questions (poorly)
Here is a pretty good assessment of the debate (From the right)
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/04/obama_shaken_rattled_and_rolle.html
I give ABC credit for finally asking some tough questions the Democrats will face in the general election. In general, the candidates were not well prepared to answer questions about policy -- like capital gains taxes and gun control. Obama especially fumbled questions about patriotism and his association with far-left radicals.

Todd's War on Ethanol
In our latest podcast, we talked about the damage being done by U.S. policies on Ethanol.
Ethanol is creating an artificial demand for corn and distorting the market for food prices around the world. This is leading to riots and starvation. Ethanol is just one factor in this problem but it is a significant one.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/15/business/worldbusiness/15food.html?ei=5065&en=9e715f242c497f48&ex=1208923200&partner=MYWAY&pagewanted=print
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/04/14/ccview114.xml
Here is the analysis from the Wall Street Journal from February 13, 2008:
The ink is still moist on Capitol Hill's latest energy bill and, as if on cue, a scientific avalanche is demolishing its assumptions. To wit, trendy climate-change policies like ethanol and other biofuels are actually worse for the environment than fossil fuels. Then again, Washington's energy neuroses are more political than practical, so it's easy for the Solons and greens to ignore what would usually be called evidence.
The rebukes arrive via two new studies in Science, a peer-reviewed journal not known for right-wing proclivities. The first, by ecologists at Princeton and the Woods Hole Research Center, reviews the environmental consequences of increased biofuel consumption, which had never been examined comprehensively. Of course, that didn't stop Congress and the Bush Administration from jacking up the U.S. mandate to 36 billion gallons by 2022, a fivefold increase from a mere two years ago. Such policies are supposedly justified because corn-based ethanol and other "alternatives" result in (very modest) reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions when mixed with gasoline.
The researchers break new ground by exposing a kind of mega-accounting error: Prior studies had never credited the carbon-dioxide emissions that arise when virgin forests, grasslands and the like are cleared to grow biofuel feedstocks. About 2.7 times more carbon is stored in terrestrial soils and plant material than in the atmosphere, and this carbon is released when these areas are cleared (often by burning) and the soil is tilled. Compounding problems is the loss of "carbon sinks" that absorb atmospheric CO2 in the bargain. Previous projections had also ignored the second-order effects of transferring normal farm land to biofuels, which exerts world-wide pressure on land use.
So, incredibly, when the hidden costs of conversion are included, greenhouse-gas emissions from corn ethanol over the next 30 years will be twice as high as from regular gasoline. In the long term, it will take 167 years before the reduction in carbon emissions from using ethanol "pays back" the carbon released by land-use change. As they say, it's not easy being green.
The second study comes out of the University of Minnesota and the Nature Conservancy and explores what the authors call the "carbon debt" when native ecosystems are converted to biofuel stock. Until the debt is repaid, biofuels from those fields will be greater net emitters than the fossil fuels they replace. The authors find that the debt for corn ethanol in the U.S. is between 48 and 93 years. In Indonesia and Malaysia, which have a 1.5% annual rate of deforestation to produce palm oil for Western European biodiesel, the debt is as high as 423 years. Yep, that's four centuries. Even Fidel Castro won't last that long.

Obama sticks it to the little guy
So much for the smooth talking Barack Obama. Addressing a crowd of San Francisco Democrats, Obama made this comment about the people of Pennsylvania who are upset about the state's economy.
"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
How about some straight talk about the world's changing economy? What they are really clinging to is the hope that certain manufacturing jobs will reappear. Obama and Clinton love to feed that delusion. Yes there are things we can do to make the United States more competitive, but so far Obama and Clinton haven't supported meaningful pro-business proposals that will help the people of Pennsylvania.

Lying Bill Clinton apologizes for Lying Hillary Clinton by Lying. Sets New Personal record for number of lies in a single sentence.
Here is Bill Clinton's quote:
"A lot of the way this whole campaign has been covered has amused me. But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. Did y’all see all that."
If you will count the number of items in bold above you will see 5 separate lies all in one sentence.
1. Hillary told the story three times, not just once. I thought Bill Clinton read the papers.
2. She did not tell the story late at night. She told the story at different times of the day on different days.
3. She was not exhausted. See #2. Also, I thought she was our 3:00 a.m. savior???
4. She let the story drag on for over a week before clarifying and apologizing.
5. She went to Bosnia in 1996.
Does Bill Clinton lives in his own fantasy world?

Shock Report: The Government Wastes Our Money
Government employees were using government credit cards to buy themselves ipods, lingerie and anything else they could get away with, to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

This is reason number 101 that we should not expand the size and scope of government.
David Mamet, America's greatest living playwright, recently declared he is "no longer a brain dead liberal" because he realized that the private sector is organized much more efficiently than the government. Hopefully his fans are paying attention.

Did Gen. Petraeus see his shadow?
Hillary Clinton had an especially dumb quote today:
“Senator McCain’s Groundhog Day approach to Iraq means four more years of the Bush-Cheney-McCain policy of continuing to police a civil war while the threats to our national security, our economy and our standing in the world mount,”
So McCain is like a groundhog because when he sees his shadow, he predicts four more weeks of winter... er... more years of combat.
The Groundhog analogy is weak as a metaphor and even weaker as a joke. Did McCain see his shadow or did Pataeus in this analogy? Does Hillary have a shadow? I think we can see why Hillary is losing this thing.

It is safe for Matt Damon to vote for McCain
For years, many liberals have made the false assertion that you only have credibility to support a war if you have served in the military and/or if you have a child serving.
The New York Times is now reporting on John McCain's son going to Iraq.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/06/us/politics/06mccain.html?_r=2&hp=&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1207505511-KTxcbcqQmXGYFmS0ju8b6Q
At least liberals can now vote for McCain without making themselves sound like total hypocrites.
Here is a fun flashback of Matt Damon sounding especially stupid on the topic.

Hollywood was more patriotic before 9-11
In a recent Podcast, Sam and I discuss Hollywood's refusal to make patriotic, pro-U.S. movies about the war on terror. Check out this thoughtful video:
http://www.theatlantic.com/movies/iraq-movies
One of the key observations is that Hollywood actually made a lot of movies before 9/11 about Islamic terrorism like True Lies, the Siege, and Executive Decision. Today we mostly get box office duds where America is the villain.

Obama Posts Record Profits!
Obama raked in $40,000,000.00 in March. $40 Million! In one month!
Liberals think that if you are a Democratic presidential candidate spending millions of dollars every month on TV ads, that makes you an amazing person.
But if you are an entrepreneur and you make $40 million by providing goods and services to customers then you are a rich person who deserves to have your taxes raised.
There is some irony here.

Jesse Ventura is a Crazy Person
I will confess I used to like Jesse Ventura. Just a little. He was a wacky independent who campaigned on tax cuts. Now he has long hair and mostly espouses liberal talking points becuase that is what makes you popular with the media. What shall we call the Democratic Party?
Somewhere along the way, the "Democratic" party decided democracy wasn't so great. They created Super-Delegates. Then they decided to throw the votes of Michigan and Florida in the trash can. I know the 2000 recount was was a long time ago, but wasn't it a motto of Democrats to "count every vote" in Florida?
So clearly the Democrats need a new name because they are not democratic. Here are some suggestions:
The abortion party
The surrender party
The hate Bush party
The high tax party
The affirmative action party
The Audacity of Hope Party
Obamacrats
Hopecrats
Submit your own!

Why is Hillary Staying in it? Because she thinks she owns the party.
I see the Democrat contest as a struggle between two groups who think they own the Democratic party. The Clintons think they own it because they gave the Dems their one big victory in the last 28 years. The Moveon.org anti-war crowd thinks they own it because they raise the big money and they have the pulse of the grass roots.
But it is a sad commentary when the far left pushes out people like Joe Lieberman who was their own VP nominee.
My guess is that the Clintons believe Obama will lose to McCain. The entire Clinton strategy has always been about winning moderate voters that Obama probably can't get.
So now Hillary sees herself as both a martyr and savior who must go all the way to the convention.
